There are three tasks that are being researched as part of WP5
Task 5.1
Will plan and design the integration and installation of the new metrology sensors into a pilot manufacturing line, including work to design adaptations to Slot Die/R2R machines within the existing lines to improve workflow with the new system. This task will design and implement a mechanical mounting system to achieve the best alignment between the sensors and film substrates on the R2R machine. This will require significant input from CPI staff who run the current printing lines at CPI and multiple discussions in Y1 will minimise risk in this area to allow process control by our ML control algorithm’s.
Task 5.2
Will operate the in-situ metrology equipment and capture large amount of data using materials from project partners and will test the computing handing method delivered by WP3.
Task 5.3
Will see final integration of sensors + ML + model framework into the operating control for the line, demonstrating fully responsive film manufacturing of high value films. This task will link the measurement to the manufacturing parameters to optimise the manufacturing process. WP5 is augmented by; a feasibility study at the CPI via an EPSRC Researcher in Residence project (HM) addressing metrology system integration; involvement of project partners offering access to coating infrastructure (Smartkem, Emerson & Renwick, and FOM Technologies). CPI partnership is essential for T5.2, due to their ability to conduct batch and continuous coating trials on industrial manufacturing equipment in a clean-room environment (ISO9001) as well as formulation scale-up using industry-relevant equipment with in- & off-line analysis of materials, which will be essential to validate the approach, and to maximise end-user engagement.
